Spring 2024

Spring has arrived and it is time to open up our shop 6 days a week. Our usual opening times are Monday to Friday 1pm to 4pm and Saturday 11am to 4pm. With one exception that we are aware of. We are closed Wednesday 24th April. Otherwise we plan to be open as advertised.

We are at present working on our charity quilt for this year. It is almost complete and raffle tickets are for sale in our shop. The draw takes place at the annual Agricultural show on the 8th of August. Funds raised this year will go to the RNLI.

This year is also our bi-annual Quilting Exhibition. This takes place in Ballygrant Hall from the 17th to the 24th of July.
We have our usual competitions: A4 size quilt, your own design, Fat Quarter challenge, fat quarter available at the shop for £2. And it is “the best use of a fat quarter”,, Quilt no smaller than 1 metre Title “Round the Bend”, 18×18 cushion cover, your own design. Some of us are already working on a ‘mystery’ quilt which should be complete for the exhibition.

We are always on the look out for new members, so if you live on Islay and enjoy sewing please come along any afternoon to join us and see what we are all about.

Susan runs a beginners class on a Monday afternoon and is hoping to open the workshop on a Tuesday evening from 4pm to 8pm for those who are working . We will try this for the summer and see how it works out.

Please come and visit us whether you live here or are on holiday. We would love to see you. We have lots of lovely items for sale

October 2021

Shop opening hours have been changed in all sections apart from Location. For some reason I cannot seem to edit that particular page. So this year our opening hours are as per front page.

1pm – 4pm. Monday to Friday

11am – 4pm Saturday

closed Sunday

We are happy to be able to re open following such a difficult year last year. Our main exhibition was cancelled in 2020 so we plan to hold it in 2022.

Do please visit our small exhibition as previously mentioned in The Gaelic Centre throughout October.
Our AGM will be held this year on the 9th of October and we can actually meet in the person at the workshop at 1pm.
This post is a bit late for this but it has been advertised locally
Please visit us if you can. We do have some lovely pieces for sale

Update and AGM

This has been a long and difficult year. Our shop has now been open for some time but only three days per week.

We will continue to open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1pm – 3pm and Saturdays from 11am – 3pm for as long as possible. With all the Covid 19 restrictions we are hoping to start some online sales. Check out our Facebook Marketplace from next week. we hope to have some Christmas items available soon. If you cannot get to the shop at the opening times please contact us via email and we will try to help

Our AGM this year will have to be conducted entirely on Zoom. So that should be interesting. This will take place on Tuesday 29th September at 1pm. Please find the Trustees Report below.

Masks for the Community

Hi Everyone, Still no news on opening our shop but we are looking at ways it can be managed when the time comes.

In the meantime we have been asked to make masks for the vulnerable in our community now that lockdown is easing. so, in essence, we are looking for as many voulunteers as possible. Many hands make lightwork!

We will supply fabric and elastic for those who do not have any. Someone will be in the shop ( at a social distance) on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons at 2pm for the next two weeks to either collect made masks or give out fabric.

Many thanks in anticipation

Scarves for Cancer Patients

This is another idea to add to our activities during this time of isolation. These scarves are very easy to knit when we want a break from sewing. Of course we have to collect them at home until this pandemic is over but think of the number of people who will be happy to receive one when we can eventually give them out.

The pattern is quite simple: – using Chunky wool and 6mm kneedles, cast on 24 sts, or double knitting wool, cast on 33 sts. Knit in stocking stitch, garter stitch, moss stitch or any pattern you prefer to a length of 150-200cm (60ins)

The scarves can of course be crocheted if you prefer.

We look forward to seeing the finished results along with all your quilts!!

Update on Exhibition 2020

Due to the current situation with Covid 19 we have decided to cancel this year’s Exhibition . We will reschedule for next year. The Challenges will remain the same, so this will give us all lots of time to complete your projects! We can only apologise but we look forward to lots of entries for 2021

Before or after shopping. Drop in and see us at Islay Quilters. For Any Craft. tell us what you would like to try. Work on a project you are already doing or just come and have a cup of tea and a chat.
We look forward to seeing you
